What is Lower-Limb Arterial Duplex?

Lower-limb arterial duplex uses ultrasound to examine the arteries of the legs and assess blood-flow patterns.

The examination may identify narrowing, blockage, or other arterial changes that could help explain symptoms or guide follow-up.

Common Reasons for Referral

  • Leg pain or cramping with walking
  • Numbness or weakness with concern about circulation
  • A cold, pale, or discolored foot or leg
  • Skin color or temperature changes
  • A wound on the foot or leg that is slow to heal
  • Weak pulses or another clinician-defined arterial concern

What Happens During the Examination

  1. 1You lie on an examination table with the legs accessible
  2. 2Blood-pressure cuffs may be used when part of the requested protocol
  3. 3Ultrasound gel is applied along the leg
  4. 4The transducer follows the arteries from the groin toward the ankle
  5. 5Images, waveforms, and blood-flow measurements are recorded
